LODI MAN SENTENCED FOR PASSING COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY WHILE DEPLOYED WITH CALIFORNIA NATIONAL GUARD IN IRAQ
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — United States Attorney Lawrence G. Brown announced today that JOSEPH DEANDA, 46, of Lodi, was sentenced today by United States District Judge William B. Shubb to one and a half years in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release for passing counterfeit currency. DEANDA pleaded guilty on April 27, 2009.
This case was the product of an extensive investigation by the Lodi Police Department and the United States Secret Service.
According to Assistant United States Attorney Kyle Reardon, who prosecuted the case, between July 2007 and May 2008, DEANDA deployed with the California National Guard to Iraq. During his deployment, the defendant received counterfeit $100 bills from his wife. He knew that these bills were counterfeit and spent at least three of the counterfeit bills at military Post Exchanges (P/X) in and around Baghdad, Iraq.
In sentencing, Judge Shubb said that DEANDA’s connection with a Lodi area counterfeiting operation was substantial and that his sentence reflected the defendant’s involvement in the long-running scheme.
Co-defendants HOLLY ARMADA HAWORTH, 29, and SHELIE LOUISE RADOTIC, 30, both of Lodi, have pleaded guilty and are scheduled to be sentenced in October. The remaining co-defendants TAMI KISHI DEANDA, 41, and CLINTON EARL IRONS, 32, of Lodi, have a court hearing on August 31, 2009.
