POSTAL EMPLOYEE SENTENCED IN THEFT FROM U.S. MAIL

SACRAMENTO, Calif.—Acting United States Attorney Lawrence G. Brown announced today that United States District Judge Edward J. Garcia sentenced DEAN EDWARD HUDSON, 29, of Marysville, today to five months in prison to be followed by five months of home confinement. He was ordered to pay $2,944 in restitution to the victims of his theft of funds from the U.S. mail.

This case is the product of an investigation by the United States Postal Service Office of the Inspector General.

According to Special Assistant United States Attorney Jean M. Hobler, who prosecuted the case, HUDSON worked at the United States Postal Service’s Marysville Processing and Distribution Facility and, from July 2008 until December 2008, opened greeting cards entrusted to his care and took cash that he found. He then placed the cards back on the processing line, upside down so that the machine would not jam on the damaged envelope. He pleaded guilty May 5, 2009.

HUDSON is due to begin serving his sentence on August 28, 2009.
